Model Railways Provide Hours of Fun

In recent years there has been nothing short of an explosion in interest in model trains and railways. Some people think this is due to baby boomers now buying train sets for their children, keen for them to experience the fun that they can recall having as children.

There is no denying that this is certainly the case for me. I am a baby boomer myself and I recall spending many happy hours with my brother and father building complex model rail networks. We completely transformed our dining room into what we called our railway room with a huge, elaborate system of tracks and buildings. We managed to remain in the railway room up until Christmas of that year when we had family guests coming for Christmas dinner and my mother insisted that the railway was dismantled and the dining room returned to its original use. I can distinctly recall how disappointed my father was when he was forced to dismantle and box up the train track, locomotives and trackside buildings.

In fact, reflecting on those days, I think it was doing things with my father that was more important to me than the model railway. My father never really showed any interest in my school work or playing football or and sports for that matter. But when it came to model trains and railways he would suddenly become animated and enthusiastic. The one guaranteed way to get him to put down the newspaper and leave his comfortable armchair was to suggest we have a session on the railway.

Model trains are good for any age, providing a fun, rewarding and engaging hobby. Model trains are not toy trains. They are scale models of the real thing and can provide a valuable educational aid, helping youngsters to become familiar with the history of rail transport, the development of railway technology and how locomotives have developed through the ages.

Way back in the 1850s Marklin, a German manufacturer of dolls-house accessories, introduced the first boxed train-set. This was intended to broaden their market by appealing to boys. They were also responsible for producig accessories for their train sets including trackside buildings. The company are still going strong today.

Electric powered trains are reputed to have been introduced by the American company Carlisle and Finch in 1897 but it was the Lionel Corporation who were responsible for developing the product. Their first Electric train, called the Electric Express, was actually not intended for sale. It was originally intended to be used as a storefront display.

Jump forward to today and you will find many fathers, like myself, who have fond memories of many hours shared with their fathers building and playing with model train sets. We buy systems for our own children but, in truth, its more about us re-visiting our own childhoods and the happy times that we spent with our trains.

Encouraging art and creativity in children

Encourage creativity in your children by providing them with the time, resurces and the space for making art.Set aside interruption-free time for drawing, in a mess-proof zone – so that their creativity can run wild. Make sure you cover all surfaces so that any splashes of paint or scribbles of crayon are ‘caught’ – because  nothing squishes creativity more so than a parent saying “Don’t make a mess” every 2 minutes.

Choosing the right drawing materials is also very important. Many craft materials can be improvised (think of kitchen roll tubes, yogurt pots etc) but when drawing tools and paper are required, opt for a small selection of good quality age-appropriate products, rather than loads of inferior products. Be sure to check safety information and follow instructions. Young children should always be surpervised during arts and crafts activities because many necessary materials – such as crayons – pose a choking hazard.

Surroundings:As with writing or working at a computer, good posture and a comfortable position are important for drawing. A child-size table and chair is actually preferable to an easel. If the chair is a little high, provide a phone book as a footrest. A coffee table and an inexpensive plastic chair work well. A small kitchen storage trolley is ideal for containing supplies, or if space does not permit, a portable tackle box is a good option too. Messy toddlers may need a drop-cloth and supervision to avoid stained walls, as even ‘washable’ pens very often don’t deliver on that promise!

Art Materials:Avoid cheap markers, too-hard pencils and thin paints – these types of materials are discouraging to the child and therefore  a waste of money. Provide many sheets of plain blank paper to inspire their creativity and occasionally invest in a canvas so that your child can paint something and chances are you’ll want to hang it on your wall!  Provide also coloring books or coloring pages which are bountiful online – coloring pages are not so great for creativity, however they do provide children with the  chance to practice their fine motor skills and sometimes it’s very relaxing and just what they need. They can simply color in without the ‘pressure’ of thinking about WHAT to draw.  Little boys typically enjoy coloring pictures of cars and trucks while little girls usually enjoy colouring images of princesses and fairies - sites like like Fairy Coloring Pages you’ll find many coloring pictures of fairies

Keeping Kids Away From Inappropriate Books

There are plenty of kids story books out there so parents have lots of choices. Parents can read with their kids or the kids can read alone. Reading can be a great activity alone or together. Books can be expensive, though, so you may want to find a way to get cheap books such as joining the local libraries or buying from discount stores. Your local library should have lots of kids books to choose from. If they do not, they may be able to borrow from other libraries, even from out of state libraries.

It is very important to find the right books to start your children off. You need topick suitable books that are also fun to read so that your kids will like reading and will want to read more. At your library, you are going to find books that are age appropriate for your children and books that your children should not read. Some parents just let their kids loose in the kids’ room of the library and let them find what they want to read. Other parents prefer to read kids book reviews and only give appropriate books to their kids. There are plenty of kids’ book reviews online, in newspapers, and in magazines for parents. Your local library may also have a list of recommended books for children to read.

For babies or toddlers, board books are very good. They are usually small books made of cardboard. They can withstand rough handling and can withstand being thrown around. You can also clean the pages quite easily because many of them are glossy. There is a lot of board books in stores and they can be quite cheap. Board books often have colorful pages and simple storylines with few words so that babies and toddlers can get used to the idea of reading even when they cannot read yet.

Many toys in stores have been recalled but the stores would not quit selling them them. If you are not up to date with the toy recall list, then you might purchase some good looking toys that your children will love to play with but they may have some toxic, harmful materials. You need to be careful when buying toddlers toys or any toys for babies especially because even a tiny amount of dangerous material in toys can be very harmful to them.

It is disturbing that toxic toys continue to be sold in stores all across the nation, despite lots of laws that aim to protect kids from toxic toys. Toy safety is a big problem that parents cannot ignore. While most toys on store shelves are considered safe, there continues to be quite a few toys that pose a range of safety hazards to small children. Therefore, parents and child care providers need to exercise care in order to prevent toy-related deaths and injuries. With more knowledge, the scope of unsafe toys has been widened to include toys that were considered to be safe such as those labeled as phthalate-free. Bear in mind that even some products labeled phthalate-free may contain the dangerous chemical.

Although manufacturers of toys should act fast to recall products that are unsafe and also give parents all the information they need so that they will be able to buy toys that are safe for their kids, some of them care more about their profits. You will no doubt have heard of many toy recalls in the news but there are a lot more toy recalls that are not published. As a result, parents may not be aware that they are unsafe to use or buy. The Consumer Product Safety Commission, the agency whose goal is to keep toys and other products safe, have released alerts and information on toy safety but there are still tons of manufacturers that are ignoring Congress and still sell toys laden with toxic substances. The Consumer Product Safety Commission cannot do much about existing toys that are already out on the shelves.
