Taymouth Castle

Taymouth was completed in 1807 by the 1st Marquis of
Breadalbane. Like Blair Castle the building adjoins an estate
village-Kenmore, which was built in 1760 by the 3rd Earl of
Breadalbane. The Campbells, rulers of the area for several
centuries had a violent past but by the time Taymouth was built
they had become respectable members of the nobility and the
castle reflects their status. Built in the Gothic style from
massive blue/grey blocks, it is very imposing. It was not
designed for defence as it has large windows and some intricate
stained glass. The grand stairway is extravagantly decorated and
there are textile hangings and ornate wood panelled interiors.
Queen Victoria and Albert visited in 1842 and were lavishly
entertained. By 1920 things were different and the estate was
sold. Later uses include a hotel, a military establishment and a
hospital. It is now empty but is soon to be redeveloped.
Refreshments are available at the golf club house.

Castle Menzies

This is a wonderfull example of a 16th century Z fortified

This Old castle lies on the B846 just out of Weem
nearAberfeldy. It was the seat of the chiefs of Clan Menzies
until 1918 and was one that gave hospitality to Bonnie Prince
Charlie in1746. It made the transition from fortified tower to

Huntingtower Castle

Just outside Perth it dates from the 15th Century and was built
by the Ruthvens who had been there 2 centuries before that. Mary
Queen of Scots visited while on honeymoon, the house was called
House of Ruthven at the time.In 1582 it was the scene of the the
Raid of Ruthven when Marys son the 15 yr old James 6th (1st of
England) was captured by Protestant nobles. The family forfeited
the castle after the Gowrie conspiracy and the tower has been
Huntingtower since. The oldest part is the 15th century keep and
16th century tower house. An additional part was built between
the two creating a single buildingHistoric Scotland…

 

Elcho Castle 

Standing on the edge of the River Tay near Rhynd, Elcho was
built by Sir John Wemyss in the 2nd half of the 16th century.
The family was granted an Earldom by Charled 1st in 1633 and
used the castle as their main residence for approx 200 years.
The design shows the need to create an easily defended structure
combined with some level of domestic comfort and privacy. The
castle owners chamber is a large, well lit room with inner
chamber and traces of an elaborate plaster cornice. As the other
bed chambers it has a fire place and adjoining latrine. Historic

Scone Palace 

In the early part  of the 8th century Scone was the capital of
Pictavia, one of the 4 kingdoms of Scotland and adopted as such
in 844 the ruler Kenneth McAlpin, it was he who brought the
“stone of destiny” to Scone upon which Scottish kings were
crowned. In 1296 the stone was taken by Edwards army to England.

Scone features most fine french furniture, wonderful porcelain
and astounding objets d’art. Outside there are a Laburnum arched
